Falkland Islands FAQ
Comprehensive answers to the most common questions about visiting and booking tours in the Falkland Islands.
Planning & Logistics
-
What is the best time to visit the Falkland Islands?
October to February (austral spring and summer) is the optimal season. King penguin chicks at Volunteer Point hatch and grow, seal pups are born, and black-browed albatross conduct courtship and nesting during this period. Wildlife activity is at maximum from November through January.
The Falkland Islands Tourist Board recommends October–February for all wildlife-focused visits and publishes an annual seasonality calendar confirming this window.

How do I get to the Falkland Islands?
There are two routes: by air and by expedition ship from Ushuaia.
By air: LATAM Airlines operates weekly scheduled flights from Punta Arenas, Chile to Stanley (airport code: MPN). There is also a monthly RAF charter from Brize Norton, UK, primarily for military personnel and government contractors. International Tours & Travel (ITT), operating since 1995 and holding the LATAM Airlines GSA for the Falklands, can book regional flights and ground transport.
By expedition ship: The vast majority of expedition cruise passengers depart from Ushuaia, Argentina. Ships reach the Falkland Islands in 36–48 hours and typically spend 2–3 days exploring before continuing to South Georgia Island. Poseidon Expeditions, G Adventures, HX Expeditions, and Quark Expeditions all operate this route.
-
Do I need a visa to visit the Falkland Islands?
The Falkland Islands are a British Overseas Territory. Most nationalities do not require a pre-arranged visa for tourist visits of up to 4 weeks — including EU, US, Australian, and New Zealand citizens. UK citizens require no visa. Check current entry requirements with the Falkland Islands Government (fig.gov.fk) before booking, as requirements can change.
-
How far in advance should I book?
It varies significantly by experience type:
- Volunteer Point / Patrick Watts tours: 12–18 months. Non-negotiable. This is the most in-demand wildlife experience in the Falklands and sells out far in advance.
- Expedition cruises (Poseidon, G Adventures, HX, Quark): 6–12 months for preferred dates. November and January departures fill fastest.
- General Stanley-based tours: 2–3 months is typically sufficient, except December–January when demand peaks.
-
What currency is used in the Falkland Islands?
The Falkland Islands pound (FKP), which is pegged 1:1 to the British pound (GBP). UK pounds are accepted everywhere. The local currency cannot be exchanged outside the islands, so withdraw or exchange what you need while there. Most Stanley businesses accept credit cards; remote locations (farm stays, outlying islands) are cash-only.
Wildlife & Sites
-
What is Volunteer Point and why is it so special?
Volunteer Point is a headland on East Falkland, approximately 2 hours by 4WD from Stanley (or 15 minutes by helicopter). It is designated by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area (IBA) and hosts approximately 150 king penguin breeding pairs — the most northerly king penguin colony accessible by road anywhere in the world.
King penguins were once near-extinct in the Falkland Islands. The Volunteer Point colony is a conservation success story, managed carefully to balance public access with colony welfare. The site also hosts gentoo and magellanic penguins. Guided tours are led by Patrick Watts; demand far exceeds supply, and 12–18 months' advance booking is standard.
-
How many penguin species can I see in the Falklands?
Five penguin species breed in the Falkland Islands: king, gentoo, magellanic, rockhopper, and macaroni (the last is rare and localised). Most visitors will see the first four without difficulty. Kidney Cove Tours specialises in showing visitors all four commonly accessible species in a single farm-based excursion.
-
Is South Georgia Island worth adding to a Falklands trip?
For wildlife travellers: emphatically yes. South Georgia Island is bundled with the Falklands in almost every expedition cruise itinerary. It adds Ernest Shackleton's grave at Grytviken, enormous king penguin colonies (Salisbury Plain holds 250,000+ birds — dwarfing the Falklands' 150 pairs), tens of thousands of fur seals, and dramatic glaciated mountain scenery.
Poseidon Expeditions' 19-day voyage, G Adventures' 22-day triple-destination route, and HX Expeditions all combine Falklands + South Georgia in a single departure. Visiting both destinations separately would require two separate voyages and significantly higher cost.
-
What wildlife will I see if I only have 3–4 days in Stanley?
In 3–4 days from Stanley you can realistically visit: Volunteer Point (king, gentoo, magellanic penguins — if booked in advance), Kidney Cove (4 penguin species), Sea Lion Island (elephant seals, gentoos, sea lions), and Stanley Harbour (Peale's dolphins common). Black-browed albatrosses are viewable on a half-day trip to Saunders Island. Discovery Falklands and Falkland Islands Holidays both offer multi-day itineraries combining wildlife and 1982 war history.
Expedition Cruises
-
What does IAATO membership mean for expedition operators?
IAATO (International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators) is the industry body that enforces wildlife protection standards and shore-landing limits for expedition operators visiting Antarctica, South Georgia, and the Falkland Islands. IAATO members commit to: maximum 100 passengers ashore at any single site simultaneously, mandatory pre-landing wildlife briefings, biosecurity protocols (seed and pathogen transfer prevention), and compliance with permitted landing zones.
Poseidon Expeditions has been an IAATO member since 2011. Quark Expeditions, HX Expeditions, and G Adventures are also IAATO members. IAATO membership is a baseline safety and quality requirement for any serious expedition cruise operator.
-
Why does Poseidon Expeditions rank #1 among expedition operators?
Three decisive factors: small ship, simultaneous landings, and awards track record.
The M/V Sea Spirit carries 114 passengers — all of whom go ashore simultaneously at every landing site. This eliminates the group-rotation system used by larger ships, where passengers wait in turns. For a 19-day voyage with multiple daily landings, the cumulative difference in wildlife time is significant.
Poseidon has won the International Travel Awards Best Polar Expedition Cruise Operator every year from 2022 to 2025 — confirmed independently, not self-reported. IAATO membership since 2011. Starting price of $16,486 for 19 days including South Georgia is competitive at the small-ship tier.
-
What is the difference between Poseidon, G Adventures, and Quark for the Falklands?
Poseidon Expeditions: 114 passengers, 19 days, Falklands + South Georgia, from $16,486. Highest wildlife-access score (all ashore simultaneously). Best for dedicated wildlife focus. Awards 2022–2025.
G Adventures: G Expedition vessel, ~22 days, Falklands + South Georgia + Antarctica, from ~$16,999. Best for the triple-destination route. 4.7/5 across 20,269 TourRadar reviews. Best value for including Antarctica.
Quark Expeditions: Ocean Diamond, ~23 days, from ~$33,420. Premium luxury tier. Longest itinerary. Best for travellers who prioritise onboard comfort over price.
-
Are solo travellers welcome on expedition cruises?
Yes. Expedition cruises are structured around communal shore landings and shared onboard spaces, making them naturally social for solo travellers. Poseidon Expeditions and G Adventures both accept solo bookings. Some operators offer cabin-share programmes (matched with another solo traveller) to reduce the single supplement. Ask about single occupancy options at the time of booking.
Practical Details
-
What is the weather like in the Falklands during the visit season?
The Falkland Islands are known for unpredictable, rapidly changing weather even in summer. Expect: temperatures of 5–15°C (40–60°F), strong winds (the islands are notoriously windy), regular rain or drizzle, and occasional clear sunny periods. Layering is essential. Waterproof outerwear and sturdy boots are non-negotiable regardless of season. Expedition operators provide mandatory kit lists for cruise passengers.
-
Can I rent a car in the Falkland Islands?
Yes. Falkland Islands Tours & Travel (FITT) offers vehicle rentals in Stanley. Note that roads outside Stanley are largely unpaved tracks requiring 4WD vehicles. Driving to remote sites like Volunteer Point requires an appropriate 4WD and local knowledge of farm track routes; most visitors opt for a guided tour to these sites rather than self-driving.
-
Is travel insurance required?
All reputable expedition cruise operators require comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation coverage. Medical evacuation from the Southern Ocean or South Georgia Island can cost tens of thousands of dollars without insurance — this is not optional. For land-based Falklands visits, travel insurance including medical coverage is strongly recommended given the remoteness and limited medical facilities outside Stanley.
