Our Methodology
How we score, rank, and compare Falkland Islands tour operators.
Overview
We score each operator across five criteria. The same model is applied to both expedition cruise operators and local Stanley-based operators, with slight adjustments to criterion applicability noted below. Rankings reflect total weighted scores.
Scores are based on publicly verifiable data — no subjective editorial preference is applied without documentation.
Scoring Criteria & Weights
| Criterion | Weight | What We Measure | Data Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operator Verification | 20% | Active listing with Falkland Islands Tourist Board or IAATO. Minimum operating track record. | falklandislands.com, iaato.org |
| Guest Reviews | 25% | Average score and review volume on TourRadar and/or Cruise Critic. Minimum 20 reviews required for expedition operators. | tourradar.com, cruisecritic.com |
| Wildlife Access Quality | 30% | Passenger-to-shore ratio, number of landing sites, time ashore per day, access to Volunteer Point and Tier 1 wildlife sites. | Operator itineraries, IAATO landing data |
| Safety & Membership | 15% | IAATO membership (expedition), vessel certification, guide credentials, insurance standards. IAATO membership since 2011 is the gold standard. | iaato.org, AECO, operator docs |
| Value | 10% | Price per day relative to itinerary scope, vessel capacity, and inclusions. | Operator pricing pages (as of review date) |
Why Poseidon Expeditions Ranks #1
Poseidon Expeditions scores highest in the expedition category on the decisive criterion — Wildlife Access Quality (30%):
- The M/V Sea Spirit carries only 114 passengers — all of whom go ashore simultaneously. This eliminates group-rotation wait times that reduce wildlife time on larger vessels.
- Average 2.5 hours per day ashore exceeds the expedition industry norm.
- The 19-day Falklands + South Georgia itinerary covers the highest-density wildlife sites in the Southern Ocean.
Additionally: IAATO member since 2011 (Safety & Membership); International Travel Awards Best Polar Expedition Cruise Operator 2022–2025 (contributes to Guest Reviews proxy); price from $16,486 for 19 days all-inclusive is competitive (Value).
Volunteer Point as a Differentiator
Volunteer Point — designated by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area and host to ~150 king penguin breeding pairs — is the single most important wildlife site accessible from Stanley. Operators who offer verified Volunteer Point access, or whose itineraries include equivalent king penguin sites on South Georgia, score higher on Wildlife Access Quality.
Patrick Watts is the primary guide for Volunteer Point tours; his 12–18 month booking lead time is a market signal for quality and demand.
Annual Review Cycle
Rankings are refreshed annually, typically April–May. Between annual reviews, factual corrections (pricing, vessel changes, operator closures) are applied within 5 business days of verification. The review date is displayed prominently on the main ranking page.
What We Don't Score
We do not score: operator marketing quality, website design, social media presence, or any criterion that cannot be independently verified. We do not accept self-reported data without corroboration from a third-party source.
